The 4 Of Us - Opening the BAG for 2017/2018 Season

The 4 Of Us - Brendan and Declan Murphy - in Mick Murphy's, November 2016
Photo: Mj Smyth

Website: www.the4ofus.com

Last November, Brendan and Declan Murphy, the backbone of Newry band, The 4 Of Us, played BAG, and it was - as promised - a night to remember.
I'm delighted to announce that The 4 of Us return to again play BAG @ Mick Murphy's, Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare on Monday, September 4th. (In truth, the lads booked their return before leaving the venue last time - they loved playing for us, and were instantly keen to return.)
Doors 8:30pm. Admission is €15. No advance ticket sales, so do come early, and form an orderly queue!

Having released their debut album - 'Songs For The Tempted' - in 1989, the band went on to release four further studio albums over the years - 'Man Alive' - '92; 'Classified Personal' - '99; 'Heaven and Earth' - '03, and 'Fingerprints' - '06, which were all critically acclaimed. After a ten year recording hiatus, the brand new record - 'Sugar Island' was just released in October 2016. It's chock-full of fine songs, drawing on the Murphy brothers' experiences growing up in Newry. Brendan's trademark soulful vocal has aged well, and has lost none of its impact, while brother, Declan's intricate acoustic guitar work drives the sound.

“With twelve songs in all, ‘Sugar Island’ offers a little bit of everything that we have come to love and expect from the band – the soulful voice of Brendan against a backdrop of Declan’s stunning acoustic guitar playing.” – FOLK & TUMBLE album review.

A full Irish Tour in support of the new record has been ongoing since the release, with many of the shows in a stripped down acoustic format with just 'The 2 of Them'! - brothers, Brendan and Declan Murphy with two acoustic guitars. And it works; oh, boy, does it work!

So, here's your chance to once again catch the band in an intimate setting, re-live late-80's memories, and hear a set that showcases the depth of the band's back catalogue, and the excellent new songs from 'Sugar Island'.

This one will live long in the memory - don't miss it!

Coming next: 11/9 - Malcolm and Chris (U.S. Blues Duo); 18/9 - John Blek; 25/9 - Niall Connolly

"She is not just a songwriter, nor accomplished musician, nor poignant entertainer - I have been awed by the soul-punching talent of Krista Detor.." - WNC Magazine (Feb. 2015)

MusicDish magazine calls her work: "..like Richard Wright’s 'Manchild in the Promised Land' or the musical equivalent of Akira Kurosawa’s 'Dreams';" The Allmusic Guide calls her “An artist of rare ability with a deep poetic gift,” and Rolling Stone, "A small miracle."  Krista Detor’s solo albums have reached national and international prominence, including #1 on the Euro-Americana Chart, and placement within the top 10 of the U.S. Folk and Independent Music charts, but she is no ordinary songwriter: Detor has been involved in several award-winning collaborations, including the highly-acclaimed 'Wilderness Plots,' (PBS national), for which she and fellow writers, including American College of Arts & Letters inductee author Scott Russell Sanders, were recognized by the Indiana Legislature for contributions to the arts (2010), and which resulted in (2) Emmy nominations and a Golden Eagle award.

She was the only American woman invited to The BBC's Darwin Songhouse Project, Shrewsbury England (2009); Says Neil Pearson, Producer of the project: “Krista is one of the very finest modern songwriters at writing within character; and her ability to convey the emotions of the people that inhabit her songs is utterly convincing and believable.. The compelling way the narratives are delivered make one of the most flexible and empathetic writers. Her understanding of the human condition and her ability to express the motivation for her characters give her songs real impact and resonance with the listener.”

She has been commissioned to write musical theatre for The U.S. Dept. of State in New Delhi, India (2012); For the Indiana Arts Commission ('The Breeze Bends the Grass,' recipient of the Indiana Arts Commission's Masterpieces Grant - 2016); and has written commissioned choral pieces for several national and int'l choirs. In addition, she's been a returning presenter at Stanford University, wherein, her album, 'Chocolate Paper Suites' was a multi-year ‘required reading’ assignment for the literature course, "The 'isms of Modernism," in which students sought to explore modernism's impact on, and negotiation with, contemporary culture and art. Says Dr. Rod Taylor of the album, “This album provides an excellent example of how the most salient elements of modernist art and philosophy persist in postmodern culture. Its poetic and intertextual lyrics, captivating melodies, meaningful organization, and complex narrative thread will undoubtedly lead to rich discussions among my students.” She has conducted songwriting seminars, performances and presentations at universities and arts centers throughout the world, including Ireland's prestigious IMRO performing rights organization. In February, 2015, she was Artist-in-Residence at the renowned Hedgebrook foundation.

Krista will conduct the first of her signature cross-cultural collaborations, along with Dr. Rod C. Taylor, in Northern Ireland, May, 2017 - taking 20 songwriters on an immersive, 10-day songwriting retreat in the beautiful Mourne Mountains, County Down. In 2018, she hopes to host 12 Northern Irish writers for a similar experience in the U.S. She continues to tour the U.S., U.K., and Europe all the while. She's shared stages with Victor Wooten, Chuck Rainey, Loudon Wainwright, The Neville Bros. and Suzanne Vega, among many others.

Krista lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

Cormac O'Caoimh - LIVE @ BAG - Monday, May 8th (CD Launch)

Cork singer/songwriter Cormac O'Caoimh is about release his fourth solo record, 'Shiny Silvery Things' on May 12th. As part of the release, he plays three CD Launch gigs in Cork, Dublin, and, firstly, Ballymore Acoustic Gigs in Ballymore Eustace! This rather special evening will take place on Monday, May 8th, in Mick Murphy's, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare.
Admission, at just €12, includes a copy of the new CD. Doors open at 8:30pm for a 9pm show.

This is a terrific new record, from one of Ireland's most innovative and individual songwriters. Early reviews have been highly complimentary:

"Rich, rewarding exemplars of mature, observational songwriting, as though The Smiths had actually grown up and become responsible adults. Shiny Silvery Things positively rings with brightness and charm in a jewel encrusted trinket box full of delightful vignettes and new-found-sounds. There are so many standout tracks that it seems pointless to try to separate them in a spurious order of merit, so I won’t try." - 1380 Radio Recommends

"hidden depths and lyrical touches that make the listener sit up and take notice...melancholy and joyous, at once catchy and thoughtful." -Americana UK

In time of constant change, certainties remain. Among them is the music of Cormac O Caoimh.. hook laden songs, superficial simplicity disguising thoughtful compositions, lyrically deep explorations and that all important personal touch that reflects O Caoimh’s music… varied, finely painted and ever-widening illustrations” - Folkwords

John Statz (USA) - LIVE @ BAG, Monday, April 24, 2017

John Statz in the studio, recording his new record, 'The Fire Sermon'
John Statz returns to Mick Murphy's, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare on Monday, April 24th, on the European release tour of his new record, 'The Fire Sermon'. Doors open at 8:30pm. Admission is €12.

John Statz has been writing love songs lately, specifically about the kinds of romantic love that burn. Namely, all of them. When we first enter a new relationship we are filled with burning desire. Sometimes we later take those same relationships for granted and seemingly burn right through them. At the end we might find ourselves literally burning old love notes, or bridges, which turns out to be an excellent time to listen to that fire in our bellies. Hit the road, see something new, spend time on ourselves. The Fire Sermon is more than a meditation on romance in the 21st century, it is an assertion gleaned from trial by fire.

One of the more prolific and hard-working young songwriters working in the Americana genre, John Statz has released seven studio albums, and performed all over North America (including Canada and Mexico) and Europe, all in just a shade over a decade. Throughout that time he’s been writing the kind of songs that float through your mind and stay nestled in your thoughts long after listening (American Songwriter) and it’s been said that his songwriting can stand beside the best and above the rest (No Depression). Along the way John has attracted the attention of the likes of Americana scene heroes Jeffrey Foucault and Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown), who separately produced his last two records. This latest is produced by fellow Denver songwriter Megan Burtt, whose instincts and backing band help bring forth an entirely new sound from Statz. The title of The Fire Sermon was taken from the third section of T.S. Eliot’s poem, The Wasteland, the name of which was borrowed from a sermon given by Buddha, in which he denounced the fires of passion, hatred, and infatuation with which the senses burn, according to Eliot’s endnotes. At the very end of the Fire Sermon section Eliot simply repeats, “Burning burning burning burning.”

John Statz was given a guitar by his grandmother when he was 15, which turned out to be perfectly timed for a teenager who, after ten years of piano lessons, had lost interest in classical music and had taken to learning John Lennon and Elton John tunes, first trying out his singing voice and turning towards rock and roll. Spending the rest of his high school years in southern Wisconsin attempting to play and sing like Neil Young and Cat Stevens, it wasn’t until Statz was 19 and attending university in Oshkosh that he began writing songs. The spark lit after attending a show at the storied Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin featuring Jeffrey Foucault and Peter Mulvey, who quickly became heroes, and, much later on, fast friends and colleagues. The first record, Dusk Came Slow, was engineered by a friend enrolled in the university recording program, and what followed for John has been 11 years of touring everywhere from Bellingham to Budapest, Fairbanks to Mexico City, all the while becoming a stronger songwriter, and a more compelling performer.
