Blackbird & Crow/Richie Healy & Friends - Double Bill. Monday, Feb 26th.

On Monday, February 26th, I'm delighted to present two BAG Debutantes for the price of one - literally!

From Donegal come duo, Blackbird and Crow (Maighread Grace and Stephen Doohan).

Ever wondered what a 21st century Rory Gallagher and Janis Joplin pairing would sound like? Well, wonder no more.

Whether performing their high energy electric slide guitar driven foot-stompin' Blues, or their more paired-back acoustic guitar led material, this is one hot act, Live. Delighted to have them in the BAG.

From the Marble City of Kilkenny, comes Richie Healy

With detectable influences as broad as Springsteen, Waits, and old Delta Bluesmen, Richie is a songwriter of tremendous depth, and striking lyrical ability.

He is beautifully backed on his brand new album, 'The Perilous Tree', by Ger Moloney on accordion, and Elise Ramsbottom on backing vocals, and both also accompany him Live.

Richie Healy presents himself humbly, and with self-deprecation, but the songs speak volumes, in their truth, and honesty.

Doors open at 8:30pm. Admission is €12 at the door. Patrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Mark Geary - LIVE @ BAG - Monday, Feb 19th

Mark Geary has become a favourite artiste at BAG, and each year his return is much anticipated.

This year sees him return with a brand new album entitled 'The Fool'. From what I've heard so far, the new record continues to exhibit Mark's fine songwriting, and gift for memorable melody.

But, it is Live where Mark Geary truly excels. He is one of the most giving of performers that you'll see play. He has a charisma on stage that draws the listener in, and once they're in, he can hold them all night.

Truly, it is a pleasure to welcome him back to BAG.

Joining Mark on the night, will be Dave Hingerty on drums, and Colm Quearney on bass.

Doors open at 8:30pm. Patrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Admission is €12 at the door.

John Spillane - LIVE @ BAG, Monday, Feb 12th

John Spillane returns to Mick Murphy's Bar, Ballymore Eustace, on Monday, Feb 12th, 2018. Doors open at 8:30pm, and patrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Admission is €15, at the door.

On November 4th 2017, John Spillane, arguably Cork’s finest living troubadour, released the first in a series of three very special albums of acoustic renditions of some of his famous songs.

We’ll let John tell the story, as only John can…

"Friends have been encouraging me for years to make an album of simple, acoustic versions of my songs, and here it is. These songs were written over a period of 35 years, from 1982 to 2017. With the exception of 'The Streets of Ballyphehane' they have all been previously released by myself and many of them have been covered by artists like Pauline Scanlon, Christy Moore, Karan Casey, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Seán Keane, Róisín El Safty, Máire Ní Chéilleachair, Sharon Shannon, Méav, Nell Ní Chróinín, Cathie Ryan, Caroline Fraher, George Murphy, and by bands such as Nomos, Solas, Danú, Greenshine, The Outside Track, Project West, Girsa, Shooglenifty and The Battlefield Band. Hurray!

Other singers who have performed live versions of these songs include Mick Flannery, Mary Black, Brian Kennedy and Declan O' Rourke.

Happy days in the Hit Factory. It's been a blast.

It is a great honour for me that my songs have been sung at many Irish funerals and at many a wedding as well, and by singers at sessions around the world. Thank you all.

The lyrics and the stories behind the songs are all in my book 'Will We Be Brilliant Or What? Songs and Stories by John Spillane ' - The Collins Press 2016.

Well done everyone!"  -
John Spillane, Passage West, County Cork, October 2017.

7th Annual 'Vibe for Larry' - Friday, Dec 8th

Each year in early December we pay tribute to our dear departed friend, Larry Roddy; this year's 'Vibe for Larry' is the seventh year of so doing.

Larry was a music promoter, and agent. But mostly, he just loved folk music of all kinds. He loved the idea of putting musicians and listeners in the one room, and watching the magic happen between them; he delighted in seeing performer and listener come together as one, sending melody and applause out into the good night.

And so, at this time each year, we - his friends, family, and regular BAG attendees - come together to remember him with love, and in appreciation for all the musical gifts he gave us. In doing so, we send our own music, songs, poetry, stories, and laughter out into the good night so that it might reach Larry, away off out in the great beyond.

It is always a joyous evening.

So come along on Friday, Dec 8th, from 8pm. All musicians, singers, etc. welcome. Admission is free, but we will have a voluntary contribution box this year in aid of Dublin Simon Community - a charity Larry always tried to do a bit for.

Edit: The collection on the night yielded €200 which was forwarded to Dublin Simon Community. Thanks to everyone who came along and contributed; it was a great night.

Luka Bloom - Live @ BAG - Monday, Dec 11th

Before he up'd sticks and moved to Clare a few years back, I used regularly meet
Luka Bloom walking in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Pollardstown Fen, not far from his hometown of Newbridge, Co. Kildare.
There, we'd chat about that place; about life, and about the music. He'd heard what I was doing with BAG, and was supportive and encouraging. I suggested he might play the gig himself, sometime.
One Monday night he arrived in to catch a gig - Maria Doyle Kennedy, and Kieran Kennedy - and afterwards Luka came to me and said he'd love to come back and play it himself. Well, he did; the place was packed to the rafters, and it was a terrific night.

Some time has passed since, and the time has come for Luka Bloom to return to BAG; he has a brand new album, just released, called 'Refuge', so you could consider this it's Ballymore Eustace launch!

Come along for the last BAG show of 2017 - Mick Murphy's Bar, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare; Monday, December 11th. Doors open 8:30pm. Gig - 9pm sharp. Admission is €15 at the door.
Please note: To avoid disappointment, you are advised to arrive early. Capacity is limited to about 50 people, seating is limited, too. From some parts of the bar, the view of the stage is restricted, so to get the best spots, you'll need to be toward the head of the queue.
